Once again Sorry, but I still disagree...

I do agree, it may not be their card, but just because their parents are paying that 100,000 bill, it doesn't mean that money came from improper/illegal means...A business family with very legitimate business can spend that soft of money easily...

It seems to be a common opinion that all wealthy people made their money from illegal means, which I found very insulting....There could be generations of hard work behind that money...

I strongly disagree. If you have mentioned business in india, then there is no Legitimate way of doing business. There will be at least 1 way where they are cheating the government, which may look like a legitimate way, but it is not. For example, selling products without bill.

Definitely, if the money is hard earned, then the parents would worry about their underage son spending it lavishly.

Ahem!
How about somebody doing business for 3 generations, and pay the required tax bill and still let their 16 year old son to have a birthday party that costs 300,000?

Did they bribe as part of their business? Yes, otherwise its impossible to run a business in india...But did they took bribe? No...Did they cheat govt or anybody else? No...

What I am trying to get at is, spending is not a sin..And big spenders are not sinners...And in fact Rs.300,000 birthday party could be some sort of business networking...And all wealthy people are not sinners, at least not more than the rest of the public...

The amount of money the children allowed to spend is always comparative...If a father makes 1,000 a month, he will be worried if his son spends 100 on his birth day party...Same time, a father makes 10,000 a month will not be worried for 100 but will be for 1000...So, if a father makes 10 crore a month is not going to be worried about 300,000 bill...Now, from the 1st father's point of view, a father who makes 10,000 and allows 1,000 to be spent on a birth day party could be a sinner (and all that money came from illegal means??)

Its all relative...

Also psychologically, having children on a tight leash is never going to help them...If you nag them for every penny they spend, its very likely they will grow up with no appetite for risk taking....Think big mate....The world has changed...

I do agree. But no family with a legitimate business will allow their kids to indulge in misuse of credit card week after week. Its unnecessary headache for the family.

How about somebody doing business for 3 generations, and pay the required tax bill and still let their 16 year old son to have a birthday party that costs 300,000?//

If you read the report, you can see it is not a birthday party arranged by the family or paid for by the family.

Its a ring of 8 students plus their girl friends throwing a party on every friday using a credit card.

certainly the bill is not for food alone. It may include the drinks atleast which is another illegal matter because of their age.

Do you think, a good parent will allow this sort of thing apart from the money factor week after week?

//Did they bribe as part of their business? Yes, otherwise its impossible to run a business in india...But did they took bribe? No...Did they cheat govt or anybody else? No...//

They may not take a bribe but the bribe they paid is passed on to the community. any way thats not the issue here.

//What I am trying to get at is, spending is not a sin..And big spenders are not sinners...And in fact Rs.300,000 birthday party could be some sort of business networking...And all wealthy people are not sinners, at least not more than the rest of the public...//

yes. no body can question that. This is a weekly party by the urchins using the credit card, and stuffing away the black money. If their parents allow that to happen week after week it is a sin. They are also part of the public.

//The amount of money the children allowed to spend is always comparative...If a father makes 1,000 a month, he will be worried if his son spends 100 on his birth day party...Same time, a father makes 10,000 a month will not be worried for 100 but will be for 1000...So, if a father makes 10 crore a month is not going to be worried about 300,000 bill...Now, from the 1st father's point of view, a father who makes 10,000 and allows 1,000 to be spent on a birth day party could be a sinner (and all that money came from illegal means??)

Its all relative...//

Yes. allow is the catch word. If i give 10k to my son to spend it the way he want its something. If i ALLOW him to use my credit card illegally and pay for whatever he spends week after week then its something else.

// Also psychologically, having children on a tight leash is never going to help them...If you nag them for every penny they spend, its very likely they will grow up with no appetite for risk taking....Think big mate....The world has changed...//

Here the leash is with the kid. He forces the parent to cover his illegal business.

//Work hard...Play hard....//
yes. True
//Think big...Play big....//

Here is the catch. They play in crime because the poor middle class father who could afford just a good school cant back up the spending.

vasu balaji said...

/BTW, my comments are not against Vanampadigal...But, I am just talking about mass psychology.../

I understand. But the reality is quite a number of middle class students who joined the professional course with good marks are involved in murders for gain, chain snatching, boozing. Its a pity to watch them crying confessing pleading the family to forgive them. And always there is one such friend in the group.

bro,
if those celebrations are within the high profile party community no problem ,, but if they invite (even with the true friendship) the other middle class what will happen to their minds..do they have the capacity to channelize? most of the young criminals do crime just to live like these.. and even if you defend them please remember a young boy who was killed by his own friends because of his life style and true friendship.
//

Mate,

I agree on your point...But the only defence is to bring up the children to face the world with all the evils around...There is no way to protect your children at all the time...

True, children from middle class families could not foot that sort of bill, but it is their parent's responsibility to use such a situation to their benefit...They should speak to their children, and tell them that if they want a lavish life style they should aim high instead of teaching their children how to lead a simple life and nobilities of a simple life...

Life is not fair...and never been fair...And the only way to bring your children to face up to today's world is to make them the fighters rather than preachers...You know what I mean?

/// if a father makes 10 crore a month is not going to be worried about 300,000 bill...///

There is no means whether the father worried or not.

But, still do you think that his Father doing the right thing? That's what Mr. Bala wants to say here. Hope u understand.
//

mmm...I think, I dont understand it....If a 16 old son/daughter spends 300,000 on a party (well, even if it is a daily event) with parents approval I dont see anything wrong with it...

But, it's entirely different matter if parents are not aware of it...Forget about 300,000 even if it is just a penny...

/ Once again Sorry, but I still disagree...

I do agree, it may not be their card, but just because their parents are paying that 100,000 bill, it doesn't mean that money came from improper/illegal means...A business family with very legitimate business can spend that soft of money easily...//

I do agree. But no family with a legitimate business will allow their kids to indulge in misuse of credit card week after week. Its unnecessary headache for the family.
//

I think, I misunderstood it...Yes, if anybody uses anybody's credit card without that concerned person's permission that would be wrong...

//
illegal means, which I found very insulting....There could be generations of hard work behind that money...//

Sorry. It is not intended in that way. I truly agree. In that kind of family the respect for that tradition is much more and cetainly they ensure that the kids dont get into trouble.
//

Probably, I would vehemently protest against the use of word tradition...What is tradition?? Some 1,000 years before the tradition is that only a king wears full dress, and the others are not allowed to wear a full dress...And later, they all were allowed to wear dhoti....But is it the case today??

Tradition, the word on its own, means something of a past....But the time is not stand still and keeps moving...

It is true, my grand parents could have started with very humble beginnings....And they started their business in a village with a aim of serving only the village....And the next generation took it to district level, and the next to state level, and the next to national level...and the next?? To international level....

Every generation adapted to the prevailing condition, which is manifestly different from previous generation...

The point, I am trying to make is, today's world calls for a different approach, and we should prepare our children to take on that world...Being humble and simple may work for Gandhian era, but not in an era of Obama...

//

Drinking at the age of 16?? Even though I myself tasted my first drink when I was 11, I wont say drinking at 16 is a good thing, unless they know what they are doing....But again, at some point, they need to know what it is like to get drunk and how to manage it....I prefer the children know the things first hand rather than being kept in a protective shell...

//
They may not take a bribe but the bribe they paid is passed on to the community. any way thats not the issue here.
//

All bets are off and I am not taking a moral high ground here...I myself have business in India, and I do know for a fact that nothing moves if you dont pay a bribe even if your business is 1000% legitimate....

Now, do I want to pay bribe??? For heaven sake no, but do I have a choice? Yes, I can choose not to pay a penny, and I may get approvals in about 100 years time, and that too only if I am lucky....

Am I to be blamed for spoiling the so godly society of India?? Oh yes, the politicians and govt. officials of India are so divine...

//

Errr...I think, we are mixing two things here....If we are talking about black money, there is no justification for it whether it was approved by parents or not...

But if we are talking about legitimate money, there is no reason about questioning...They have all the rights to allow their children to spend on whatever they want...

//Think big...Play big....//

Here is the catch. They play in crime because the poor middle class father who could afford just a good school cant back up the spending.
//

And can we blame the rich kids for that?? I wont...

Use spending as a catalyst...If you want to spend more, earn more...If you want to party hard, then work hard...

I think, that's the way today's world is.... If you want something, you fight for it....If you can't fight then you are out of the game...

We can talk about hours and hours regarding justice, being humble, simple etc etc....But the reality is a lot more darker...It is a battlefield where only the fittest ones will survive...So, lets bring up our children as fighters rather than preachers...

//

mmmh...I would say the problem lies with their parents not with the kids...

It is the responsibility of parents to bring up their kids to face the real world rather than the ideal world...

Most of the kids who break up in the first year itself belongs to parents who believed in humble and simple life, and probably led a traditional/orthodox life style....

And those kids from such a family background do breakdown in the first year of professional course itself...

I myself is an engineer, and have seen many of my friends breakdown during their first year...When I was getting suspended for two weeks for breaking knees of a final year student, they were crying in their rooms for some simple ragging...

So, all I am trying to say is, bring your children as some one who can take on the world without fear. And that sometimes involves spending, boozing, even smoking cannabis....Understandably parents wont like it, but the real world has much more bad stuff to offer...

A child who had been seen things wont be shocked that easily when he faces up the real world...

The question for any parent today is, do they want their child to face up to next century or do they want their child to get stuck in 16th century??? Your call!

i totally disagree with you Sir, though i'm a great fan/follower of you/your blog.

what does it mean "work hard" for these big fat *"#ckin' executive/ top officials?
robbing/cheating people/Govt to make more money. misusing the govt benefits. (we all saw what happened in the last recession)
kids of these stupid bastards only go crazy & make headlines for all wrong reasons.

you may claim that they play by rules-the laws only(which is not all true in most cases), even then, something that is lawfully correct NOT necessarily be Morally correct.

enjoy bigtime, with your own hard earned money. lets see, how much you could afford to spend. (this is not directed at you,Sir :)))

about business people??
BEHIND EVERY FORTUNE LIES A GREAT CRIME.

btw, its a well written article. hatsoff.
